Cyclists Urban Speedlimit Taskforce (an initiative of the Bicycle
Federation of Australia Inc) was formed in 1995-6 when it
appeared likely Australian road and road safety authorities had recognised the
inherent danger for all urban road users but especially people of all ages
walking or using mobility aids or a bicycle, which results from the continued
support of the 60km/h general urban speed limit. CUST
continues to advocate a "safe" urban speed limit, i.e. speed limits
that are appropriate and responsive to the needs of all road users in
particular settings eg near schools or shops, in recreation areas or beachside,
and in residential areas and business or commercial centres. CUST has developed
contacts and examples both nationally and internationally to assist in
achieving urban environments which are safe and convenient for all ... not just
for motorists.
