Michael Yeates
Michael Yeates is an architect, urban designer, advocate and an accredited member of the Association of Consultants in Access, Australia Inc. With masters degrees in science [environmental management]
and in environmental education, he is currently undertaking research for a PhD
in community consultation in transport policy and urban planning. He is
Convener of the Public Transport Alliance and of the Bicycle User Research
Group and is National Convener, Cyclists Urban Speedlimit Taskforce (an
initiative of the Bicycle Federation of Australia Inc).
He is actively involved in a number of initiatives from local to global
levels including pursuing "accessibility for all" through Universal
Design in urban design and transport provision, as a delegate to the First
National Pedestrian Summit which produced The Australian Pedestrian Charter
and as convener, Global Network for Gentle Mobility. He has attended
numerous conferences on planning, transport, environment, equity and ethics and
has presented papers addressing walking, cycling, accessibility and public
transport both in Australia and overseas. In April 2001, he was awarded best
paper at the 24th Australasian Transport Research Forum.
Michael has been a member of various local authority and state government reference groups including during the development and adoption of
the Integrated Regional Transport Plan for Southeast Queensland and later,
a member of the Regional Transport Reference Group set up by Queensland
Transport to advise on implementation of the IRTP. Michael was the
foundation representative of the Bicycle Federation of Australia on the State
Cycle Committee in Queensland and until recently, represented a broad range of user
interests on the State Pedestrian Committee, recently formed in Queensland.
Michael was also invited to contribute a chapter in Hugh McClintock's latest
book "Planning for cycling: Principles, practice and solutions for urban planners" published in 2002. Woodhead Publishing Limited
